Instruction Sheets

Note: These instruction sheets were designed to help people with their specific device and may not be applicable to another device. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions concerning your own device! For potential volunteers who are looking to replicate my project, hopefully these give you a good sense of how to make an effective, detailed instruction sheet.

SMARTPHONE

To see a list of your applications (Amazon Kindle, Audible, etc):

  1. Turn on your phone and scroll right (slide the screen to the left) to the second page
  2. Click on the icon marked “settings”
  3. Click on “general” in the top right corner of the screen
  4. The screen should now say “Language and input” followed by “Location” etc. Scroll down to and click on “Application manager” (10th option down)
  5. You should now see a list of all of your applications, including Amazon Kindle and Audible

To delete emails:

  1. Turn on your phone and click on the “Google” icon. Then click on the gmail symbol
  2. All of your emails will pop up. To select an email to be deleted, click on the icon on the left side of the email (this is a letter such as “C” inside of a colorful circle). Do this for each email you wish to delete
  3. Once you have clicked on the icons of all of the emails you want to delete, click on the trash can icon at the top right hand corner of the screen. Your emails are now deleted!

To use the camera:

  1. Turn on your phone and click on the “Camera” icon
  2. To take a picture, look at the screen (this will show you what you’re taking a picture of) and when you’re ready, click the icon with the camera in it at the center of the bottom of the screen
  3. If you want to view the picture, click on the circle at the bottom right hand corner of the screen and your picture will pop up

Tip: If you’re taking a picture of something lying flat on a table (like a joke to send to your son), keep the camera horizontal and flat over the image!

To delete pictures:

  1. Turn on your phone and click on the “Gallery” icon
  2. You should see three boxes marked “Camera,” “Pictures,” and “Screenshots” – click on whichever box you want to go into
  3. To delete pictures from the “Pictures” box, click on the “Pictures” box
  4. Click on the trash can icon in the top right corner of the screen and then click on each picture you wish to delete
  5. Once you have clicked on all of the pictures you would like to delete, press the delete button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen

To send someone a picture:

  1. Turn on your phone and click on the text message icon (the red icon with a white message bubble at the bottom right hand corner of the screen)
  2. To choose a contact to send the picture to, either type in the contact’s name in the search screen at the top of the page, or scroll through your messages and click on a prior conversation with that contact.
  3. At the bottom of the screen, you should see a little box that says “Type a message.” To the left of this box should be a little + symbol. Click on the + symbol.
  4. You will now see a bunch of icons pop up, including a camera surrounded by a rainbow of colors. Click on this icon.
  5. The screen should now be a camera. To take a picture, click the camera icon in the center of the bottom of the screen. If you are unhappy with the photo, click the back arrow; if you are happy with the photo, click the blue arrow, which will send the picture to your contact!

To delete a contact:

  1. Turn on your phone and click on the “contacts” icon (the white icon with the green person at the bottom left hand corner of the screen)
  2. Click on the three dots at the top right hand corner of the screen
  3. You should see a small list of options. The first option is “delete;” click on this
  4. Click on each contact you would like to delete
  5. Once you have clicked on all of the contacts you wish to delete, click the “delete” button at the bottom right hand corner of the screen
  6. It will ask if you’re sure you want to delete the contacts. Click on “Yes delete.”

To delete phone calls:

  1. Turn on your phone and click on the green “Phone” button
  2. Click on the “Recents” tab in the top left corner of the screen (you may already be in “recents” when you click the “phone” button)
  3. Click on the 3 dots in the top right corner of the screen
  4. A list of options will pop up; click on the “Delete” button
  5. Select all of the calls you want to delete by clicking on the little circle to the left of the name/number of the caller. When you click on a circle, it will become green with a little white check mark inside it.
  6. Once you have selected all of the calls you wish to delete, click on the green “Delete” button in the top right corner of the screen and your calls will be deleted!

To add a new contact:

  1. Turn on your phone and click on the contact button at the bottom of the screen (The white button with the figure of a green person inside)
  2. Click on the green circular button that has a white plus sign inside of it at the bottom of the screen
  3. A page will pop up that has a bar for Name. Click on this bar and type in the contact’s name. The bar below that says “Phone;” click on this bar and type in the contact’s phone number (you can do the same for email too).
  4. When you’ve put in all of the contact’s information, click the “Save” button on the right side of the center of the screen

To read and then delete a text message:

  1. Turn on your phone and click on the text messages button at the bottom of the screen (The red button with the white text messages inside of it)
  2. To read a message, click on it
  3. To delete a text message, click the three dots at the top right corner of the screen
  4. A list of options will pop up. The third option is “Delete Messages.” Click on this.
  5. A circle will now appear to the right of all of the messages. To select a message to be deleted, click on the circle to the right of the message. (If you want to delete all of the messages that are there, click the “All” button at the top right corner of the screen to the left of the trash can icon – this will automatically select the circles to the right of all of the messages).
  6. When you have clicked on the circle to the right of each of the messages you wish to delete, click on the trash can icon at the top right corner of the screen.
  7. A box will pop up that asks you if you want to delete the messages. Click the “Delete” button at the bottom right corner of this box.

 

COMPUTER

To delete emails in gmail:

  1. Go into gmail
  2. All of your emails will pop up. To select an email to be deleted, click on the small blank box to the left of the email. Do this for each email you wish to delete.
  3. Once you have clicked on the small box to the left of all of the emails you want to delete, click on the trash can icon (at the top center of the screen below the box that says “Search mail” and above the actual emails). Your emails are now deleted! 

To listen to music while playing a computer game:

  1. Turn on your computer and open a new tab by clicking on internet explorer in the bottom left hand corner of the screen
  2. Type Youtube.com into the search engine and click enter. You are now in Youtube
  3. At the top of the page, you will see a bar where you can type in a song. Type in the song you want to listen to and click the search button to the right of the song you just typed in
  4. A bunch of options for different versions of the song will pop up. Click on the version you want to listen to and you should now hear the song playing (you might have to listen to an ad or two first).
  5. To get back to your game, click on the internet explorer button at the bottom of the page and click on the “mini screen” that has your game on it!

To create a page break in google docs:

  1. Go into Google Docs and open a new document
  2. Click “Insert” at the top left corner of the screen (The 4th option in after File, Edit, and View)
  3. A list of options will pop up. Click “Break” (the 10th option down)
  4. Then click “Page break” and you will have a page break!

To change the margins in google docs:

  1. Go into Google Docs and open a new document
  2. Click “File” at the top left corner of the screen
  3. A list of options will pop up. Click “Page Setup” (The second option up from the bottom)
  4. A box will pop up with options to modify the page setup. Under “Margins” is the option to change the margins at all 4 ends of the piece of the paper. Type in the number (in inches) you want for each margin and then click the blue “OK” box and your margins will now be changed!

To open a document saved to your computer:

  1. Turn on your computer and click on the small folder icon all the way at the bottom left hand corner of the screen (the 5th icon in)
  2. A list of your recently opened documents will pop up. Right click on the name of the document you wish to open.
  3. This will bring up a list of options. Click on “Open” (The 1st option). You should now be in the document.

To print out a document saved to your computer:

  1. Turn on your computer and click on the small folder icon all the way at the bottom left hand corner of the screen (the 5th icon in)
  2. A list of your recently opened documents will pop up. Right click on the name of the document you wish to open.
  3. This will bring up a list of options. Click on “Open” (The 1st option). You should now be in the document.
  4. Click on the dark blue “File” button in the top left corner of the screen. This will bring up a list of options. Click on “Print,” the 5th option down.
  5. This will bring up a box with printing options. Under “select printer” click on the printer HPB49C20 (HP Photosmart 5520 series) – if it isn’t already selected
  6. Click the “print” button at the bottom right corner of the box

To print an email:

  1. Turn on your computer and double click on the Gmail tab (toward the top left of the screen). This will open up your email.
  2. Double click on the email you wish to print. This will bring you into the email.
  3. Click on the small printer icon at the top right corner of the screen (a little bit below the “C” in the red circle)
  4. A rectangular box of printer options will pop up on the left side of the screen. Make sure the document is printing to HPB49C20 (HP Photosmart 5520 series) (if the document isn’t set to print to this printer, click the “Change…” button and then select this printer)
  5. Click on the blue “Print” button at the top right corner of the box

To delete a “tab” on the home screen of your computer:

  1. Turn on your computer and right click on a “tab” that you wish to delete off the home screen of your computer
  2. A list of options will pop up. The 3rd option up from the bottom is “Delete.” Click on this. The tab should now be gone from the home screen of your computer!

To add contacts in Gmail:

  1. Turn on your computer and double click on the Gmail tab (toward the top left of the screen). This will open up your email.
  2. Click on the “waffle” (9 small squares that look like a waffle) icon in the top right corner of the screen (2 icons to the left of the “C” in the red circle)
  3. A box of options will pop up. Click on the “Contacts” button (3rd button down in the 2nd row). You should now see all of your contacts.
  4. Click on the small pink circle with the plus sign in it at the bottom right hand corner of the screen
  5. A box will pop up asking for the contact’s first name, last name, etc. Fill in this information and then click on the “Save” button in the bottom right corner of the box

To print out your list of contacts in Gmail:

  1. Turn on your computer and double click on the Gmail tab (toward the top left of the screen). This will open up your email.
  2. Click on the “waffle” (9 small squares that look like a waffle) icon in the top right corner of the screen (2 icons to the left of the “C” in the red circle)
  3. A box of options will pop up. Click on the “Contacts” button (3rd button down in the 2nd row). You should now see all of your contacts.
  4. On the left side of the screen is a rectangular box with various options. Click on “More,” the 6th option down
  5. A few options will pop up. Click on “Print,” the 3rd option down under “More”
  6. A box will pop up with the option to print contacts. Click “Print” in the bottom right corner of the box

To access the documents you and I scanned together:

  1. Turn on your computer and click on the small folder icon all the way at the bottom left hand corner of the screen (the 5th icon in)
  2. A new screen will pop up. On the left side of the screen is a list with a bunch of options. The third option down is “2018-Tax Data Cha….” Double click on this.
  3. You should now see all of the documents we scanned as small pieces of paper labeled “Scan 0001,” “Scan0002,” and so on. Double click on one of the documents to open it

 

NAVIGATOR

To modify the volume of your navigator

  1. When you turn on the car, the home screen will pop up. Click on the yellow “Settings” icon
  2. A list of options will pop up. Click on the first option marked “System”
  3. Another list of options will pop up, starting with “Day and Time.” Click on the 4th option, “System Volumes”
  4. Then, “System volumes” will pop up again. Click on it again
  5. You will now see three volume meters. Slide the volume on the 2nd meter marked “Navigation On Guidance” left and right to decrease and increase the volume of the navigator respectively

 

PRINTING

To scan a document:

  1. Open up the top of the printer and put the piece of paper you want to scan face down on the glass. Then, close the top of the printer.
  2. Look at the small screen attached to the printer (The options are “Photo,” “Apps,” and “Copy”). To the right of the screen is a small, white, lit up arrow. Click on this arrow
  3. The screen should now have 2 options: “Scan” and “Quick Forms.” Click on “Scan”
  4. A few options will pop up. Click on “Computer”
  5. 2 options will pop up. Click on “USER-PC,” the first option
  6. A screen will pop up with a blue button that says “Scan” in the bottom right corner. Click this button. The document is now being scanned and should pop up on your computer momentarily!

To print a document double sided:

  1. First, access the document you wish to print
  2. Click on the print tab at the top right hand corner of the screen. It is a small rectangular box with an arrow sticking up out of it
  3. A bunch of grey colored options will pop up. Scroll right to the “Print” icon and click on it
  4. Select printer – “Brother HL-L2390DW”
  5. Click on the “Options” button and select “Double -sided”
  6. To change the setting back to single sided, shift the green switch – located to the right of where it says “Double-sided” – to off, and your document will print single

 

IPAD

To use facetime:

  1. Turn on your iPad and click on the “Facetime” icon
  2. Click on the search bar at the top of the page which reads “Enter name, email, or number.” If you have the individual saved as a contact, you can simply type in the contact name; if you do not have the individual saved as a contact, type in the individual’s number
  3. Finally, click on the “facetime” icon next to the name of the contact whom you wish to call

To see Facebook Notifications:

  1. Turn on your iPad and slide the screen right to the second page
  2. Click on the “Facebook” app
  3. There are a few options at the bottom of the screen (News Feed, Friend Requests, Marketplace, and Notifications). Click on Notifications.
  4. You will now see your notifications on the left side of the screen. To get back to the news feed, click on “news feed” at the bottom of the screen

To use the Hotel application:

  1. Turn on your iPad and slide the screen right to the second page
  2. Click on the dark purple application labeled “Hotel Tonight”
  3. At the top of the screen, there is a bar that says “City, neighborhood or address.” Click on this bar and type in the location where you want to find a hotel.  A list of location options may come up; click on the option you want (If a previous location is on the screen, you may have to click the “Where” button at the top of the page to type in a new location)
  4. Pictures of various hotels in the location you selected will pop up. Scroll down the page to see all of the options. The price of the hotel is at the bottom right corner of the picture of the hotel.
  5. Click on a hotel to get more information on it. If you want to go back to see more hotels, click the “back” button at the top left corner of the screen

To easily get between two screens without seeing the home screen in between:

  1. Open up 2 applications – for example, Facebook and Photos
  2. When you’re in one of them – Facebook, for example – double click on the home button. This will show all of the tabs you have open as smaller, mini versions of themselves.
  3. To get to photos, click on the mini tab that has photos in it

To close out of apps:

  1. Double click the home screen button
  2. Mini versions of the various apps you have open will pop up. To close out of them (you can always open them again later, but closing out of them conserves battery), swipe the mini tab upwards
  3. When you want to get back to the normal screen, click on the home button

To get directions somewhere:

  1. Turn on your iPad and click the “Maps” button (First button in the 2nd column)
  2. In the top left corner of the screen is a bar that says “Search for a place or address.”  Click on this bar and type in where you want to go.
  3. A list of options will pop up. Click on the option that says the location you are trying to get to.
  4. A blue button will pop up thats says “Directions.” Click on this button.
  5. A list of several options for different routes you can take may pop up. The first option will be the “best route” meaning it should be the quickest route, but other routes may skip tolls or have other advantages.
  6. Click the green “Go” button on the route you want to take. This will take you to a map with a blue line that goes through all of the streets the route will take you on
  7. Near the top left corner of the screen is a black box with directions in it. It will give you one direction at a time, but if you want to see all of the directions, scroll right on the black box.
  8. When you’re done getting directions, click the red “End” button at the bottom left corner of the screen

*You can use your fingers to zoom in and out on the map if you want to see the route more/less closely

To search for something within your phone or on the internet:

  1. Turn on your Ipad and use your finger to slide the screen downward
  2. A bar that says “search” will pop up. Type in what you want to search and then hit the blue “Search” button on the keypad.
  3. A list of options will pop up, the first of which is likely “Search Web.” if you click “Search Web,” you will be brought to the internet.

To write an email:

  1. Turn on your iPad and click on the email button at the bottom of the screen (The blue button with a white email inside of it)
  2. At the top right corner of the screen is a little icon that looks like a square with a pencil on it (it is two icons to the right of the trash can icon). Click on this icon.
  3. A box that says “New Message” will come up. In the “To” column, type in the email address of the person you want to send an email to. To actually write the email, click on the large white space below the “Subject” column, which will bring up a keypad to let you type.
  4. When you are finished typing the message, click the blue “Send” button

To download an application:

  1. Turn on your iPad and click on the “App Store” button (it’s a blue button with a white A in it)
  2. Click on the “Search” button in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  3. A search bar will pop up at the top of the screen that says “App Store.” Click on this bar and type in the name of the application you want to download.
  4. A list of options will pop up. Click on the name of the application you want.
  5. The application will then pop up with a small button that says “Get” to the right of the application. Click on the “Get” button to download the application.

To send an email to yourself:

  1. Turn on your iPad and click on the “Mail” app at the bottom of the screen (Blue app with white email inside of it)
  2. At the top right corner of the screen is a little icon that looks like a square with a pencil on it (it is two icons to the right of the trash can icon). Click on this icon.
  3. A box that says “New Message” will come up. In the “To” column, type in your email address. To actually write the email, click on the large white space below the “Subject” column, which will bring up a keypad to let you type.
  4. When you are finished typing the message, click the blue “Send” button

To take a picture and then print it:

  1. Turn on your iPad and click on the “Camera” app (third app in the first column)
  2. Hold the iPad over whatever you want to take a picture of and then click on the small white circle (at the right side of the screen if the screen is horizontal or at the bottom of the screen if the screen is vertical) to take the picture
  3. Once you’ve taken the picture, click on the small box that is a mini version of your picture at the bottom right corner of the screen. Your picture will pop up on the screen
  4. Click on the icon in the top right corner of the screen that is a box with an arrow sticking out of it (the icon to the left of the trash can)
  5. Click the “Print” button at the bottom left corner of the screen
  6. A box will pop up with the printer options. When you are ready to print, click the blue “Print” button at the top right corner of the box

To delete pictures:

  1. Turn on your iPad and click on the “Photos” app (2nd app in the first column)
  2. Click on the blue “Select” button at the top right corner of the screen. Then select all of the pictures you wish to delete by clicking on them
  3. Once you have selected all of the pictures you want to delete, click the small trash can icon at the top left hand corner of the screen. Your photos are now deleted!

To delete a contact:

  1. Turn on your iPad and click on the “Contacts” app (4th app in the first column)
  2. A list of your contacts will pop up. Click on the name of the contact you wish to delete
  3. Click on the blue “Edit” button in the top right corner of the screen
  4. You will now see all of the contact’s information that you have entered. Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page. There is a red button that says “Delete contact.” Click on this button.
